According to a report of the International Diabetes Federation, 14.8% of the adult population in Kuwait have diabetes.

Diabetes is a condition where the blood glucose level rises due to the impaired production or ineffective use of insulin hormones. If it is left untreated, diabetes can worsen health conditions like stroke and heart disease also damaging nerves, eyes, kidneys and other organs. Some of the symptoms of diabetes are increased hunger, thirst, weight loss, frequent urination, fatigue and unhealed sores.

Types of Diabetes

  • Type 1 Diabetes: It also known as juvenile diabetes is an autoimmune disease that occurs when the body fails to produce insulin due to an attack on the pancreatic cells leading to insulin deficiency.

  • Type 2 Diabetes: Unlike in Type 1 diabetes, cells in the body become resistant to the insulin produced in Type 2 diabetes leading to a build-up of blood glucose levels.

  • Gestational Diabetes: It usually appears in pregnant women due to insulin blocking hormones produced by the placenta during pregnancy due to which the body becomes less sensitive to insulin. Gestational diabetes normally resolves after pregnancy.

Treatment for Diabetes

  • Insulin: People with Type 1 diabetes and some people with uncontrolled Type 2 diabetes are treated with insulin administered either as IV or via inhalation. Based on the duration of action, insulin is divided into four categories: rapid, regular, intermediate and long-acting.

  • Other medications: Other types of medications like Alpha-glucosidase inhibitors, Biguanides, SGLT2 inhibitor, GLP-1 receptor agonist along with lifestyle modifications are suggested for treating type 2 diabetes. Remember always to consult a doctor in one of the diabetes centers in Kuwait before taking your medicines as your prescription varies according to your co-morbid conditions.

For the glucose in the blood to enter the cells, the pancreas produces insulin, which sends signals to the cells in the body to absorb the sugar into the blood. For people without diabetes, the pancreas produces enough insulin to remove a sugar called glucose from the blood, into the cells, and use it as energy. However, diabetes affects this ...
